What is Sports Psychology?  The scientific definition is a philosophy of performance that focuses on positive thinking to help athletes perform their best consistently.

It is simply a way of thinking which gives athletes the best chance to experience success.  Sport Psychology does not involve helping “abnormal” people become “normal”   It involves helping “normal” people learn how to think more effectively.  Sport psychology is not clinical psychology specifically geared towards athletes.  Sport psychology is for everyone.  Although some sport psychologists become more recognized for helping elite athletes, sport psychology principles are effective for athletes of all ages and ability levels.  Sport psychologists help performers by teaching them how to PRACTICE PURPOSEFULLY during training and THINK EFFECTIVELY during competition.  If athletes cannot perform a skill in practice, it is unlikely a sports psychologist can help them perform it during competition.
