September 23, 2009 by Joy · Leave a Comment
Rain is receding as the top 30 players in the FEDEX Cup playoffs have tried their best to stay dry at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The Tour Championship is the last of the four FEDEX Cup playoff events. Weather will be a factor as more then eleven inches of rain has fallen at East Lake Golf Club . The golf course re-opened Tuesday and the new sub air system has done it’s job quickly drying off the course to make it playable. Rain continues to be in the forecast.
Below are the three scenario’s of what needs to happen for each of Dr Mo’s 3 players in this weeks field to win the FEDEX Cup and the $10-million bonus.
- Zach Johnson ranked 4th is guaranteed to win the FEDEX Cup if he wins the Tour Championship. Zach won twice in 2009, the Sony Open and Valero Texas Open. Zach has won a total of three times in the state of Georgia, recently moved to Georgia and shot a 60 in the Tour Championship at East Lake in 2007.
- Lucas Glover ranked 20th must win the Tour Championship. Tiger Woods must finish no better then 13th, Steve Stricker must finish no better then 5th, Zach Johnson, Heath Slocum and Padraig Harrington must finish 3rd or worse. Lucas Glover won the 2009 US Open, has had four top ten finishes in 2009 and tied for 8th at the 2006 Tour Championship.
- Stewart Cink ranked 26th must win the Tour Championship. Tiger Woods must finish 22nd or worse. Steve Stricker must finish 7th or worse, Jim Furyk 5th or worse, Zach Johnson 4th or worse, Heath Slocum and Padraig Harrington must finish 3rd or worse. Stewart Cink won the 2009 British Open, he played at Georgia Tech, lives near Atlanta and East Lake Golf Club is Cink’s home golf course.
Weather permitting, someone will win the FEDEX Cup and the 10-million dollar bonus Sunday.

Fedex Point projections after the Deutsche Bank Championship; Zach Johnson remains in 4th, Lucas Glover 14th, Stewart Cink 25th and Jonathan Byrd 60th. All four players remained in the top 70 and will move on to this weeks BMW Championship at Cog Hill in Lemont, IL. After this weeks event, the top 30 will move onto the final play-off event which is the Tour Championship.
Final Round – Barclays

Sunday’s final round will be another tough day at Liberty National. Three of Dr Mo’s players made a move up the leaderboard Saturday. Zach and JByrd both shot 67 and Cink shot a 71. Zach made 5 birdies in a row on the back side and is paired with Tiger for a 4th day. The last time Zach had a final round pairing with Tiger was at the 2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational which Tiger won (in the dark) and Z finished solo 3rd. Only a 30% chance of rain in the forecast, groups will be in twosomes going off one tee.
Barclays – Day 3

Three of Dr Mo’s players, Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Jonathan Byrd all made the cut in the first of four Fedex Play-off events. Unfortunately, Lucas broke his driver and followed up his 75 with an 81 in tough morning conditions to miss the cut. Zach is paired with Tiger for the 3rd day in a row which will be great to watch on TV. One tidbit to share, the pairing ahead of Tiger always has the most distractions for a player due to the commotion involved with hundreds of spectators running up to get into position. Watch to see how Jason Day, Lee Janzen, and Troy Matteson handle that tomorrow. Let’s hope Tropical Storm Danny which is headed towards New York and New Jersey isn’t the main story after the third round at Barclays.
